Henri Matisse's The Red Studio: The Journey of a Painting
“I don’t know why I precisely painted it this way,” Henri Matisse once said of "The Red Studio." Now seen as a groundbreaking work that introduced monochrome to the vocabulary of modern art, this 1911 painting initially baffled even the artist himself. In this video, curator Ann Temkin traces "The Red Studio’s" history—from its rejection by Matisse’s patron and the public, to its time in a London nightclub, to its eventual acquisition by MoMA—and considers the painting’s influence on subsequent generations of artists.

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) French Post-Impressionist painter
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) French Impressionist painter
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) Dutch Post-Impressionist painter
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) French Post-Impressionist painter
Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) French Post-Impressionist painter
Claude Monet (1840-1926) French Impressionist painter
Paul Signac (1863-1935) French Neo-Impressionist painter
Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) French Post-Impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner.
Rousseau wrote about his painting “The Dream”: “The woman asleep on the couch is dreaming she has been transported into the forest, listening to the sounds from the instrument of the enchanter.” The self-taught painter was a crucial precedent for Surrealist artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte (MoMA).
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) Austrian symbolist painter.
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) Russian-French painter of Belarusian Jewish origin. “I and the Village” displays Chagall’s distinct vocabulary of abstraction, characterized by fantastic colors and folkloric imagery drawn from memories of the artist’s Belarus home, a peasant town on the outskirts of Vitebsk (MoMA).
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) French painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who was responsible for revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century,
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) German Expressionist painter. “Street” shows two prostitutes strolling the streets, surrounded by furtively glancing men. For Kirchner, the prostitute was a symbol of the modern city, where glamour and danger, and intimacy and alienation necessarily coexisted, and everything was for sale. The intense, clashing colors heighten the excitement and anxiety (MoMA).
Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) A Spanish painter, who is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and co-founders the Cubist movement. “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” marks a radical break from traditional painting. It depicts five naked women composed of flat, splintered planes whose faces were inspired by Iberian sculpture and African masks. The Avignon of the work’s title is a reference to a street in Barcelona famed for its brothels (MoMA).
Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) French artist and co-founder of the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colours and geometric shapes.
Umberto Boccioni (1882-19160) Italian Futuristic painter and sculptor.
Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) Russian avant-garde artist, whose pioneering work and writing had a profound influence on the development of non-objective, or abstract art, in the 20th century. His concept of Suprematism sought to develop a form of expression that moved as far as possible from the world of natural forms (objectivity) and subject matter in order to access "the supremacy of pure feeling" and spirituality.
El Lissitzky (1890-1941) Russian avant-garde artist, designer and architect. “Proun” is an acronym for "project for the affirmation of the new" in Russian. Lissitzky's radical reconception of space and material is a metaphor for and visualization of the fundamental transformations in society that he thought would result from the Russian Revolution (MoMA)
Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) Dutch painter and one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art. In “Broadway Boogie Woogie”, “the tiny, blinking blocks of color create a vital and pulsing rhythm, an optical vibration that jumps from intersection to intersection like traffic on the streets of New York“(MoMA).
René Magritte (1898-1967) Belgian surrealist artist.
Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist painter. In “The Persistence of Memory”, Dali aims at discrediting the world of reality by systematizing confusion. Time must lose all meaning. Ants represent decay, particularly when they attack a gold watch. The year before this picture was painted, Dalí formulated his “paranoiac-critical method,” cultivating self-induced psychotic hallucinations in order to create art (MoMA).
Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) American realist painter. The woman in the painting “Christina’s World” is Anna Christina Olson. Anna had a degenerative muscular disorder, which meant that she could not walk from roughly 30 years of age. She was firmly against using a wheelchair, so she would crawl everywhere. Wyeth was inspired to create the painting, when he saw her crawling across a field while he was watching from a window in the house.
Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) American abstract expressionist painter. “One: Number 31, 1950”, one of Pollock’s largest paintings, exemplifies his “drip” technique, in which he dropped, dribbled, or threw paint onto a canvas laid on the floor.
